WTF?!: Hard lemonade, hard price

And if you ask Christopher Ratte and his wife how they lost custody of their 7-year-old son, the short version is that nobody in the Ratte family watches much television. The way police and child protection workers figure it, Ratte should have known that what a Comerica Park vendor handed over when Ratte ordered a lemonade for his boy three Saturdays ago contained alcohol, and Ratte's ignorance justified placing young Leo in foster care until his dad got up to speed on the commercial beverage industry.

Grand Jury Indicts DPS Trooper And CPS Worker For Sexual Assault

After listening to 63 cases, a Lubbock County Grand Jury handed down 60 indictments Tuesday evening. Those indictments could result in jail time for 58 different people including a Department of Public Safety Trooper and a Child Protective Services worker. Among the charges Tuesday were murder, sexual assault and attempted kidnapping.

Encountering the Child Snatchers, AKA, Child Protective Services

No one expects to be falsely accused of child abuse or neglect; yet bogus cases are reported daily to Child Protective Services. My own daughter falsely reported my husband for physical abuse after he refused to let her call her boyfriend one evening. The next day, CPS and the police were on our doorstep.

New questions arise on CPS ties to slain children

Child Protective Services case summaries released Wednesday discussing the agency's involvement with three slain Tucson children raise new questions, in at least one case, about its actions to keep the children safe. In March 2006, the mother of Ariana and Tyler Payne sought help from police in getting her children back from their father, Christopher Matthew Payne. Police and CPS refused to enforce her court custody order after CPS said the mother, Jamie Hallam, was being investigated for neglect. When the allegation was proved unsubstantiated in April 2006, CPS did not retrieve the children, and Hallam's family members say they were never notified.

Foster Child Says She Had Sex With Her Caseworker

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- A 37-year-old former caseworker for Child Protective Services has been charged with having sex multiple times with a teenage girl he supervised. Fredrick Shavers remained jailed Saturday, facing six charges that he had sex with the girl over a two-year period. Police said the girl, now 17, told them she was 15 when the relationship began and that they sometimes had sex in front of her infant son.

Child Protective Services Employee Accused Of Child Molestation

NOBLESVILLE -- Hamilton County Prosecutor Sonia Leerkamp painted a former Child Protective Services worker as a predator today in her opening arguments of a jury trial. The Arcadia man's attorneys maintain that their client is innocent. Cory Heinzman, 38, faces 29 charges, which include child molestation and official misconduct involving two teen boys.

OFFICER'S LIES CAUSE FAMILY'S BAD DREAM

MY CPS BAD DREAM (NOT QUITE A NIGHTMARE) BEGAN 2 1/2 YEARS AGO IN THE BEGINNING OF JANUARY. MY MENTALLY ILL DAUGHTER HAD CUT HERSELF AND CALLED 911.

Another child dies in foster home: Caregivers tell police of seizure

ADVERTISEMENT STATE: Child dies in foster home Caregivers tell police of seizure By Jack Kresnak GANNETT NEWS SERVICE Another Wayne County foster child -- the third in eight months -- died of trauma incurred at a state-licensed foster home, officials said Monday. On April 8, 3-year-old James Earl Bradley Jr. of Detroit had seizures and a possible head injury in the master bedroom of his foster parents' home in Van Buren Township. After being taken first to Annapolis Hospital in Wayne around 9:30 p.m. on April 8, the child was transferred by medical helicopter to Mott Children's Hospital at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He remained on life support there until he died Friday evening, Township Police Detective Bob Greene said Monday.

A child's nightmare: When the system fails

It was supposed to be a safe place, and the high-end, suburban home sure looked that way. But what happened inside forever traumatized the life of one 6-year-old girl.

“She will continue to be traumatized by this event,” attorney Jeff Marsh said.
