When James Bond appeared in Die Another Day with an invisible Aston Martin, many cinema-goers thought the producers had gone a little too far.

James Bond interviewed informants in nightclubs and luxury hotels. Le Carré's George Smiley preferred park benches or safe houses in Belgravia. But when Bisher Al-Rawi met the men from MI5, they chose somewhere more prosaic: a table in the basement section of McDonald's in Kensington, West London.

IT'S like something out of James Bond - but Lancashire police are among the first forces in the country to use pioneering facial recognition technology. Police are piloting a scheme that takes high-tech images of suspects and stores them on a national database.

GLENWOOD SPRINGS — You probably first saw it in science fiction or James Bond movies, a futuristic technology that didn’t actually exist in the real world. But, scanning someone’s eyes to identify them has become reality among some Colorado law enforcement agencies. The Garfield County Sheriff’s Department has used an iris scanner since 2004 to identify inmates as they are booked into the jail and to verify the right inmate is being released.
