TAMPA - The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will unveil a new anti-terror initiative Wednesday that provides businesses with domestic security information to protect assets.
Called BusinesSafe, the program is the first of its kind in the nation and actively involves businesses in protecting Florida's residents and visitors from man-made or natural threats, FDLE spokeswoman Trena Reddick said in a press release.
The program, which is Web based, will allow users to sign up for electronic alert notifications via e-mail, cell phones and PDAs that provide business-specific information about breaking news, possible threats, suspicious activity and specific preparedness techniques.
Business owners can also report unusual activity to local law enforcement, regional FDLE offices or Crime Stoppers.
Once signed up, businesses can register with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to access a Web site that shows information on how to safeguard against security breaches.
The program is free for participating individuals or businesses.
The program will be launched 11 a.m. Wednesday at the FDLE's Tampa office, 4211 N. Lois Ave. Members of the Hillsborough and Polk sheriff's offices, along with the U.S. Coast Guard, Crime Stoppers and other area business leaders are expected to attend.
