Former Abu Ghraib director has most serious charges dropped
Posted 8/20/07
Army Lt. Col. Steven L. Jordan is the first, last, and probably only officer scheduled to stand trial for abuses at Abu Ghraib prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The two most serious charges, making a false official statement and obstruction of justice were dismissed after it was announced in court that investigator Maj. Gen. George Fay "misspoke" when he claimed that he had read Col. Jordan his rights during an interview in 2004 which was the basis of the charges against him.
Jordan still is charged with disobeying an order not to discussing the investigation with others, failure to obey a regulation, cruelty and maltreatment of detainees, and dereliction of duty.
The question begs itself, "What about the rights of the people whose rights were violated under his command?" I'm glad to see Col. Stevens' rights are being so strongly upheld by military judicial procedure. I only wish the laws and procedures were applied as fairly to everyone in Abu Ghraib.
